Jacinto & Lirio

I read the papers today and saw this article on Atenean students winning an international competition. Yes, I am a proud graduate of Ateneo de Manila University so I'm naturally interested in stories like that.

The article featured the student entrepreneurs of Jacinto & Lirio. I looked them up on cyberspace and I was lead to their official website. Jacinto & Lirio are bags made from water hyacinth leather. Their vision is "Stylishness that Saves", explained further by this:

In the world's waterways dwells a simple aquatic plant, the water hyacinth. In spite of its seemingly innocent exterior, the water hyacinth (often miscalled the more popularly known "water lily") is in fact a invasive species that clogs up waterways and creates breeding grounds for mosquitoes. But Jacinto & Lirio (Spanish for "Hyacinth & Lily") sees so much potential in the water hyacinth, aiming to create fashionable items out of this unique material. Owning a one-of-a-kind Jacinto & Lirio bag shows that you have embraced the eco-friendly alternative by combating the spread of the water hyacinth. You have also helped Jacinto & Lirio empower a community in Laguna, Philippines by contributing to a special livelihood program of the Cora Cares Foundation, founded by the world-renowned designer Cora Jacobs.

Wow! How I wish I could stumble upon a project like that. For me, nothing beats being an entrepreneur (I want to own my time someday!) at the same time helping small communities. To top that, J&L is eco-friendly. We are all aware that Mother Nature needs saving nowadays. What more can you ask for, right? :)

Here are some of their products as featured in their site:

Aren't they nice? From what I've read, these bags are a bit pricey. So just think of it as your environmental contributuon to society. But one things for sure, these students have added another feather to Ateneo's already-brimming cap. Go Ateneo! Magis!
